At St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church in Raleigh the blessings of the Holy Spirit were evident for all to see on August 27th, the feast Day of St. Monica.

Led by St Luke’s pastor, Monsignor Jeffrey A. Ingham, V. F., concelebrated with Father Jairo Maldonado and assisted by Deacon Brian Phillips, over 100 Divine Mercy Radio listeners attended the closing Mass following the completion of our Catholic radio station’s Novena to St. Monica.

Catholic 540-AM established this feast day Mass and on-air Novena to St. Monica, the patron saint of lapsed Catholics, because the number one prayer request our radio station receives from listeners is from those praying for family and friends to return to their Catholic faith.

The Novena Prayers are permanently available on our website, catholic540am.org.

Divine Mercy Radio listeners were invited to submit the names of those in their lives who had left their faith, so that our Novena and Mass prayers to St. Monica would rekindle their Catholic spirit.

On Friday evening during the Mass, 775 listener submitted names were prayed over on the altar of St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church.

The beauty of every part of this special Mass cannot be overstated. While Divine Mercy Radio has broadcast many on-air Novena, this was the first Catholic Mass that Divine Mercy Radio had ever organized. It will not be our last.

Catholic 540-AM was humbled by the gracious way Msgr. Ingham and the community of St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church embraced our listeners and volunteers as their own in their magnificent, holy Church and later in their community room for the Ice Cream Social that followed the Mass.

Because of that faith community’s familiar generosity and Catholicity, we believe many wandering souls will again hear the call of their faith to be enthusiastically welcomed back to Jesus.

As one might imagine, organizing a 9-day, pre-recorded radio Novena featuring a variety of supplicants leading a day’s Novena and ending with a Holy Mass and Ice Cream Social, was a pretty big job. As our listeners know, we are a 100% listener supported and 100% volunteer Catholic radio station.

We needed help and God provided us with Tina Dawson.

Tina and her husband Dale were tireless in their leadership efforts from beginning to end. Everyone associated with this St. Monica Novena and Mass is deeply grateful for Tina and Dale’s commitment to our Catholic faith and our Catholic radio ministry. Thank you.

But as Tina and Dale will tell you, so many other wonderful people supported this event as well.

The Divine Mercy Radio board of directors and volunteer staff is so appreciative of their help as well.

First and foremost, we are deeply thankful to Monsignor Jeffrey A. Ingham, V. F., Father Jairo Maldonado, Deacon Brian Phillips as well as the altar servers, staff and parishioners of St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church. Friday evening’s Mass was magnificent in large part because of your collective efforts.

Thank you to our Catholic 540-AM Divine Mercy Radio listeners who supported the Novena with their prayers and those who joined us at Friday’s Mass.

Leading the prayers of the on-air Novena, Catholic 540-AM Divine Mercy Radio would like to thank:

• Msgr. Doug Reed, Pastor Emeritus of St. Michael The Archangel in Cary
• Fr. Jairo Maldonado of St. Francis of Assisi Church in Raleigh
• Seminarian Gabriel Nugent
• Deacon Brad Watkins of St. Catherine of Sienna in Wake Forest
• Fr. Steven DiMassimo of St. Thomas More in Chapel Hill
• Seminarian Kolbe Flood
• Deacon John DeGuzman
• Fr. Matthew Nwafor of Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral in Raleigh

Many thanks to our fellow volunteers and Divine Mercy Radio supporters whose help made the night a success, including:

• Patricia Guin
• Victoria White (photographer)
• Monica Foley
• Cecelia and Keith Flanary

St. Monica - Mother of Saint Augustine of Hippo

Monica's son Augustine refused to accept baptism and lived a passionate life with his mistress. For years Monica prayed, fasted, and cried silently for Augustine.

God heard and answered these prayers of this faithful mother. Augustine, abandoning his sinful ways, accepted baptism from St. Ambrose of Milan, on Easter Sunday, 387 AD.

St. Monica died secure in the knowledge that her son had heard God’s call and her work on earth was finished.

St. Monica is the patron saint of lapsed Catholics. Her feast is celebrated on August 27.

St. Monica Novena - Daily Intentions

Day One

Today we pray for all God’s people currently absent from our Home. May the Holy Spirit open their ears and hearts so they may hear this invitation to come home. (Pray Novena Prayers)

Day Two

Today we pray for those who were baptized Catholic, but were not blessed with families to guide them to spiritual maturity. May the Holy Spirit guide them back to our Catholic family. (Pray Novena Prayers)

Day Three

Today we pray for those who have been hurt by someone in the Church. May those of us in the Church today be a source of healing. (Pray Novena Prayers)

Day Four

Today we pray for those who take issue with the Church’s teachings. May the Holy Spirit open their hearts and minds to the truth and wisdom of those teachings. (Pray Novena Prayers)

Day Five

Today we pray for those whose sins make them feel unworthy to come to God. May they feel the warm embrace of Our Father’s loving forgiveness. (Pray Novena Prayers)

Day Six

Today we pray for all those who believe in their hearts but are fearful of judgment or institutions. May they find the support and joy of belonging to our Church community. (Pray Novena Prayers)

Day Seven

Today we pray for those who are resisting Your call due to pressures from friends and family members. May the Holy Spirit give them strength in their convictions and may the Holy Spirit fill the hearts of their friends and family with love and support. (Pray Novena Prayers)

Day Eight

Today we pray for those who feel abandoned by God. May they come to see God working in their lives, restore their faith in Him, and come home to His church. (Pray Novena Prayers)

Day Nine

Today we pray for those who are ready to come home and just need to be invited. May the Holy Spirit open our hearts and eyes to them that we may be the inviting and welcoming presence they seek. (Pray Novena Prayers)

Novena Prayers:

Exemplary mother of the Great Augustine, you perseveringly pursued your wayward son...not with wild threats but with prayerful cries to heaven. Intercede for all mothers in our day so that they may learn to draw their children to God.

Teach us to remain close to all God’s children, even the prodigal sons and daughters who have sadly gone astray.

Dear St. Monica, troubled wife and mother, many sorrows pierced your heart during your lifetime. Yet, you never despaired or lost faith. With confidence, persistence, and profound faith, you prayed daily for the conversion of your beloved husband, Patricius and your beloved son, Augustine.

Grant us that same fortitude, patience, and trust in the Lord. Intercede for us, dear St. Monica, that God may favorably hear our plea for all family members and friends who have left the Holy Catholic Church, and grant us the grace to accept His will in all things, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, One God forever and ever. Amen.

?Hail Mary (3 times)

Glory Be (3 times)

St. Monica, pray for us!

In 1981, Mother Angelica dared to “do the ridiculous, so that God can accomplish the miraculous” by transforming her Poor Clares’ monastery garage in Irondale, Alabama into a Catholic television studio broadcasting just 4 hours a day.

Anyone with any professional broadcasting experience would have told you on August 15, 1981 that it would be well beyond reasonable or even fantastic expectations to think that such a haphazard enterprise would become what is today the largest religious media network in the world. Oh yes, and it is all supported solely by donations and underwriting.

But Mother Mary Angelica was a cloistered nun, not a broadcasting professional. She simply said “yes” to God.

Armed with only a high school education, $200, and 12 cloistered nuns with no television experience, Mother proceeded turned the garage of the monastery she founded into...a television studio! EWTN received its FCC license on Jan. 27, 1981, making it the first Catholic satellite television station in the United States. A few months later, on Aug. 15, 1981, EWTN began broadcasting four hours a day to 60,000 homes.

Raleigh, North Carolina’s Catholic 540-AM Divine Mercy Radio, through its affiliation with the EWTN Global Catholic Radio Network, is one of 500 domestic and international EWTN radio affiliates. WETC-AM’s affiliation is also part of EWTN’s enormous radio broadcast platform including worldwide shortwave radio, direct broadcast satellite; programming transmitted through SIRIUS/XM and iHeart Radio.

Catholic 540-AM Divine Mercy Radio, like EWTN, is 100% listener supported. We are an independent lay apostolate that does not receive financial support from the Diocese of Raleigh. Without the regular financial contributions of our wonderful listeners and the critical financial support of our Business Underwriters, WETC-AM could not stay on the air.

On this 40th Anniversary of EWTN, we pray you will consider supporting their mission with a donation to EWTN.

Finally, we also humbly ask that if you are not yet a donor to Divine Mercy Radio, please donate here.

Thank you for your support of our broadcasting ministries and may God bless you.

Catholic 540-AM Divine Mercy Radio was honored to broadcast live from St. Michael The Archangel Catholic Church in Cary as the parish hosted “An Evening with Fr. Robert Spitzer, SJ”.

The dinner and presentation allowed invited guests to listen to Fr. Spitzer present his talk “The Four Levels of Happiness”, offering his Catholic perspective based on timeless principles going back to Aristotle - who said that happiness is the one thing we desire in and of itself, everything else is desired for the sake of happiness.

Fr. Robert Spitzer, S.J., Ph.D., is the founder and president of the Spitzer Center. A scholar, teacher, author, and seasoned leader, Fr. Spitzer is a pre-eminently a theologian and philosopher. His other fields of expertise, however, include management science, finance, ethics, and physics. Born in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1952, Fr. Spitzer entered the Society of Jesus in 1974, was ordained a priest on June 11, 1983, and took final vows April 4, 1992.

In addition to a pre-talk interview with Fr. Spitzer, Catholic 540-AM Divine Mercy Radio hosts Ellen White and Peter K. O’Connell also interviewed the event’s organizer, local Catholic businessman Bob Luddy and St. Michael’s pastor Fr. Michael Burbeck. Many of the guests in attendance were also interviewed a part of the exclusive, live broadcast.

Divine Mercy Radio will soon announce a rebroadcast date for the event which can be heard on Catholic 540-AM and the Divine Mercy Radio app - available to download for free from Google Play and the Apple App Store.

Eastern and central North Carolina’s 100% listener supported Catholic radio station, Catholic 540-AM Divine Mercy Radio, will host its next Live On-Air Pledge Drive Wednesday, April 14th through Friday April 16th. This will be the volunteer-run radio station’s first Live On-Air Pledge Drive of 2021.

The theme of this Spring Pledge Drive is “Our Daily Bread”.

The fundraising focus is to raise money specifically and importantly for the Raleigh-based Catholic broadcaster’s significant monthly bills for normal operations. For example, 10,000/4,400 watt radio stations that operate 24 hours a day use a lot of electricity – monthly operational bills like that add up for Divine Mercy Radio.

Because Catholic 540-AM is completely independent and not financially supported by any Diocese, Divine Mercy Radio relies on the generosity of its listener-donors to pay the station’s bills for normal operations and critical projects. Businesses can also support the radio station through advertising/underwriting programs that feature on-air and website announcement for the businesses.

None of the fundraising for this Spring’s “Our Daily Bread” fundraising campaign for Divine Mercy Radio will go towards the station business loan it took out when the 501(c)(3) corporation bought WETC-AM two years ago.

To donate, supporters can make their tax deductible donation by calling 919-300-5400 or by visiting the website catholic540am.org.

Donations can also be made via Divine Mercy Radio app for iPhone and Android; available via the Apple App Store or Google Play, the Divine Mercy Radio FREE app can be found by searching "Divine Mercy Radio NC".

Catholic 540-AM Divine Mercy Radio is North Carolina’s largest Catholic radio station.
